These were done by Christopher David Ryan and can be found at his online shoppe MyLittleUnderground.net

Mini-Lecture Series: Patrick Redmond

You may have noticed a new professor last fall in the GD department and he's here to tell you what he's all about.
Our first guest speaker is Patrick Redmond.
Tuesday April 28th, 5:45pm, APPA 321

Patrick Redmond started his official design career when he was 16 years old. He took every opportunity he had, reached out, designed some pretty sweet stuff for some pretty huge organizations and hasn't stopped since. He is founder and owner of Saint Paul, Minnesota-based Patrick Redmond Design. His career, to date, has included providing design for over 130 clients through his firm. He is a very experienced designer and has a lot to share with everyone!

This was a great opportunity to see what he was all about. He's a legit professor who has more real world experience than any of us might have. He takes his business seriously and has a lot to teach. Those that went to his mini-lecture saw what being a graphic designer meant back in the late sixties and how so much has changed since then.

Student Spotlight: Genevieve Ruebel

The next student spotlight is one of my favorite people to have design classes with.
Drum Roll please....
introducing Genevieve Ruebel
She's on a huge kick right now to create scenes with her tablet and place in photos she's taken of her friends. I love them. Genevieve probably wont turn down any freelance opportunities so you're welcome to contact ruebelg@uwstout.edu. She's also mad crazy with her photography skills and works in Millennium photographing student work. Check out some of her other work here

Portfolio 1 on 1 : what you missed

If you didn't attend this years portfolio 1 on 1 you should be kicking yourself. Not only was it a great learning experience it was also a lot of fun.

5 Stouties got there around noon on Friday and right away everyone was split up into groups of 10 for studio tours. My group went to Hunt Atkins, Imagehaus and GdB. Each place was very different - in the decor, their attitude and work they've completed. It was a huge insight on how they run their company and what they are all about. My favorite tour and person I met was Jay Miller, the Principal at Imagehaus. In a nutshell he told us to always be true to yourself, develop business relationships and don't work for free. (We also got a way cool pillow case!)

After studio tours there was a panel discussion wit Brian Grant from Olson, Sara Nelson Forss from Werner Works, Jeff Johnson from Spunk Design Machine and Mike Haeg from Schematic.

The next morning was all about Portfolio Reviews. All of us Stouties ended up seeing at least 4 reviewers for a half an hour each to discuss our portfolio. This was a knockout experience. I definitely learned my strengths and weaknesses and what needs to be revised and expanded on. I think we all also learned that our work, how it's put together, how it's shot, how it's displayed, how we present it is completely subjective. I met with 4 different people with completely different roles in the design world and they all thought that I should display my work differently than my last reviewer. Bottom line though: Expand your projects. Even if you were only assigned to do a poster, make an invitation, signage, buttons, bench signs, ANYTHING. Employers want to see a full campaign.

I'm not going to give away all the tips and tricks. It was maybe one of the best ways to spend $90. I gained tons of insight and connected with other students and professionals.

BigDotofHappiness seeking Entry Level Graphic Designer.

Sherri Yukel over at Big Dot of Happiness is seeking an Entry Level Graphic Designer. They are located halfway between the school and the hospital off of Stout Road.

They are looking for an email marketing designer and a basic entry level product development designer to fit the look and feel of their product lines.

If your curious about Big Dot of Happiness and what your possible roles would be just e-mail Sherri. sherri@BigDotOfHappiness.com 800.274.4282 x 203

This is a great opportunity. We just got done with portfolio 1 on 1 in the cities and very few companies are using interns this summer let alone hiring designers. Plus it's right in Menomonie so how closer could you get? From the looks of it, Big Dot of Happiness kind of reminds me of Gartner Studios in Stillwater which was the parent company of my past internship. Just being around this type of thing will open your eyes and will be such a great experience. Plus, how cool would it be if people can buy the things you helped designed?
